Online marketing is an extension of traditional forms of marketing, the only real difference between online marketing and real world marketing is that online marketing is done as the name suggests on the Internet.

Marketing your goods or services on the Internet rather than or in addition to off line or traditional marketing has several advantages, these would include, but not be limited to:

  • Cost
  • Audience
  • Speed

With traditional marketing you would need to contact news papers magazines printers, PR companies etc to get word of your latest service out to the people in your area or country that you do business in, if your budget was large enough you could go for a global launch, however this took a lot of planning and was hughley expensive, times and technology have changes and it is now possible to get just as much impact without spending a penny.

Please read part 2 of this blog post when we discuss the cost of an online marketing strategy and how you can attract a global audience with a few minutes work at no cost.

Online marketing it’s the future – Cost

We have looked at the possibility of producing and marketing a new product or service off line, or what is sometimes called the real world, the barrier to entry with many of the off line solutions is often cost, to promote a new product or tell people about your new service is expensive if you are going to do it through the media.

A local newspaper advertisement that is just a quarter of a page in size and will only run for one night will cost upwards of £700, you can get discounts if you agree to long term commitments or get an advertisement free if you place 3 and things like this but for a campaign to have true impact you need to keep an advertisement running for weeks if not months and the costs very quickly get in to the thousands of pounds.

These figures can be multiplied by a factor of 10 if you are looking for national coverage and if you want your advertisement shown on television then a budget in the tens of thousands of pounds is required, not very realistic for a small company.

However there is some hope, with the internet you can announce your new service or product to a targeted audience at a very low price, often free.

Some ways of achieving this are to write a blog post and post it on your companies blog, others can then pick it up and the buzz begins, you can use social media such as twitter or face book and get the word out, write a press release and tell the world.

All these methods are free and easy to do, if you have a website you should look into search engine optimisation to get your site found in the search engines.

In the next part of this blog we will be looking at the audience you can attract online.

Online marketing its the future – Speed

The final advantage of using online marketing is speed, the internet can put your ideas, products or services in front of a huge world wide audience in a matter of minutes, for example this article you are reading now was put onto my blog and within 5 minutes Google had sent over its search engine spiders and they had indexed the newly created page and added the information to there listing so that people searching for this information would be able to find it.

Even with the huge budgets available to them this is something that the largest companies in the world can only match they can not get information into the public domain any quicker than you, this is a critical advantage when it comes to online marketing over the more traditional off line and media marketing that you may already be familiar with.

If your website employs proper search engine optimisation techniques you can compete with your biggest competitors.

Online marketing it’s the future – Audience

When you market on line the objectives are the same as when you market off line or as some say in the real world, this is a term that makes little sense as it seems to be suggesting that people who gather information or search online are not real people or maybe real buyers, but anyone who has done any online marketing knows the audience for your goods or services on-line is more focused and larger than you could ever hope for in the off line world.

As you have already learned the cost of online marketing makes it extremely attractive, you can get word of your new service or product to an eager market for little or no cost.

The cost is not the most attractive part of online marketing that honer should go to the audience, you can find a market for almost any service you could imagine and the number of people interested in almost every tiny niche related to these topics is where the true power of the internet lies.

Just imagine for a moment that you were a designer of fishing rods, your new range is perfect for Bass fishermen who night fish as it has a special reflective coating that attract Bass at night. Now you might think that there would be a small number of people interested in this product and reaching them would be difficult, and using traditional marketing techniques you would be right, you would need multiple advertisements in numerous fishing magazines to ensure to connected with your audience, and if you wanted to market international that would cost you a fair amount.

However using online marketing you can combine Pay Per Click (PPC) and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) techniques to get you found by night time Bass fishermen.

Before you start with your online marketing campaign you can get a realistic idea of how many people are looking for night fishing and Bass related terms, how much effort it would take to get your site to the top of the search engines for these terms and how much you would need to pay on PPC.

I hope you can see the power of the internet when it comes to looking at potential markets for new goods or services you are thinking of offering to your customers.
